Luella James became a school teacher in the early 1900’s. She moved to Juneau, Alaska to teach in 1920 and then to Seward the next year where she taught for two years. In 1924, Ms. James met and married P.C. McMullen. Together they started McMullen’s Store. She promoted literacy throughout her lifetime, reading to children and teaching people to read. Ms. James lived in Seward for fifty-seven years and was devoted to the town and its children.
