The Alaska Community Foundation is pleased to announce six Basic Needs grant awards totaling $35,226 to nonprofit organizations in four communities. The Basic Needs grant cycle offered grants for programmatic and general operational support to nonprofit organizations that are meeting the fundamental needs of Alaskans statewide. This year’s Basic Needs grants will help support safe homes for women at risk, ensure food banks remain well-stocked, provide meals for rural seniors, and shelter for homeless individuals. Here are two Basic Needs grantees’ comments:
We are grateful for ACF’s partnership in helping people experiencing homelessness this winter. When the temperatures dip, Anchorage’s homeless shelter exceeds capacity. Recently, 40-50 people had been camping outside the shelter when it was full. This grant will help fund emergency shelter overflow beds so that no one has to spend a winter night outdoors.
-Michele Brown, President, United Way of Anchorage; Anchorage, AK
We are thrilled to have received funding from The Alaska Community Foundation for our New Beginnings Program. One of the largest hurdles facing victims of domestic violence and their children is securing safe and stable housing once they are ready to move forward with their lives. This grant will enable us to assist our victims and their families to transition into permanent housing so they can sustain employment, enroll children in neighborhood schools and generally establish a healthy living situation.
-Agnes Moran, Executive Director, Women In Safe Homes, Ketchikan, AK
This is ACF’s second round of grants that have pooled resources across Alaska to ensure basic needs are being met in our communities. The following grants came from the Alaska Fund, Safety Net Fund, the Caroline Christen Torgerson Memorial Fund, and the Jane H. Behlke Fund for the Elderly and the Hungry.
Grant recipients:
Fairbanks Community Food Bank, Fairbanks
Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc., Anchorage
United Way of Anchorage, Anchorage
Upper Susitna Food Pantry, Upper Susitna
Upper Susitna Seniors, Inc., Upper Susitna
Women in Safe Homes, Ketchikan
The Alaska Community Foundation is excited to provide support for these six organizations as they provide important resources to communities across our state.
