Anchorage residents know and love their city for its world class trail system. This unusual access to the outdoors is here today thanks to a cadre of individuals who envisioned a place where trails are accessible and fun for all. Two individuals stand out for their commitment and galvanizing efforts over the years: Jim and Sally Burkholder. Leaders in Anchorage cross-country skiing since the 1960s, Jim and Sally worked tirelessly with others to achieve a year-round trail system for all skill levels. Today, through the establishment of a Field of Interest Fund at The Alaska Community Foundation and a generous legacy gift, Jim and Sally are ensuring that generations to come will have unparalleled access to Anchorage’s outdoors.
