The Brian R. Young Sports Travel Fund was established in honor of the memory of Brian Young. The original charitable purpose of the fund was to help young athletes with expenses related to travel off-island for athletic competitions. Contributions from The Peg and Rick Young Foundation started the fund. Brian was the first cousin to Joanne Young, president of the family foundation at the time. The family recalls that Brian, like his Uncle Rich, had a love of storytelling, the ability to calculate and mediate risk, a keen business sense, strong leadership, integrity, and a habit of helping others anonymously.
The Fund was originally set up as a non-endowed Affiliate Advised Fund of the Kodiak Community Foundation with KCF serving as Fund Advisor. As the fund balance has grown with further contributions from The Peg and Rick Young Foundation and others, KCF has now converted the fund to an endowed Affiliate Advised Field of Interest Fund. The charitable purpose remains the same, to support young Kodiak athletes with expenses related to travel off-island for athletic competitions. Grants will be made to nonprofits and/or schools, not directly to individuals.
