New Trails for Alpine Access in Chugach State Park
Please join us and donate to build two new shovel-ready Chugach State Park trails. The Muktuk Marston – Hunter Pass Trails access alpine meadows, spectacular Alaska Range views, Cold War-era Nike missile booster remnants, and blueberries galore. They connect Arctic Valley Trailhead over Hunter Pass to the South Fork Eagle River Trailhead.
The trails are shown in the Chugach State Park Trails Management Plan, are professionally designed to meet Chugach State Park trail standards, and are approved by Chugach State Park for hiker and equestrian use. They received support letters from the Chugach State Park Citizens Advisory Board, the Arctic Valley Ski Area operators, and the Friends of Nike Site Summit. With designs and approvals in place, fundraising is the next step toward construction. The Alaska Community Fund is assisting in raising the $180,000 construction cost. If funds are raised quickly, these trails could be built in late-summer 2021.
Individual donations are especially vital to help leverage major grants. Please be one of the first 50 donors to build the match money necessary for grant applications. The Student Conservation Association has already pledged an in-kind donation of trail crew labor.
