There are many reasons that scholarship season at ACF is exciting – and we’re pleased to add four more to the list.
Our last group of eight spring scholarships just opened this week, half of which are brand new to ACF! That means four more opportunities to tell stories of legacies behind the scholarships and four new ways for students to pursue their dreams.
As of March 7th, ACF launched cycles for these four brand new scholarships, all of which are memorial scholarships. Named for amazing Alaskan historians, chefs, pilots and coaches, we couldn’t be more honored to announce their inaugural cycles here.
The THS Patricia Roppel Scholarship
This scholarship comes to The Alaska Community Foundation through a generous donation from the Tongass Historical Society of Ketchikan, Alaska. It was established to honor the legacy and contribution to historical Alaskan writings of Patricia “Pat” Roppel. Pat and her husband Frank moved to Southeast Alaska in 1959 and they both fell in love with area. Pat, being a historian and writer, authored many books and articles on topics relating to timber, fisheries, mining, and the history of the Southeast.
To honor Pat’s legacy, The THS Patricia Roppel Scholarship will make an annual award of $5,000 to students who most exemplify the spirit and qualifications of this scholarship.
The Kathryn E. and John P. Doyle Scholarship
Formerly run through the UA Foundation, this scholarship was recently established with ACF in memory Kathryn and John Doyle. Both exemplary Alaskans, Kathryn and John highly valued education and believed it had a far-reaching impact on lives of students.
This scholarship will make up to two $5,000 awards for female students studying a science-related degree. Awards will go to one eligible graduate student and one eligible undergraduate student, attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The Chef Cotter Scholarship
The Chef Cotter Scholarship comes to ACF through a group of donors in remembrance of a dear friend and amazing chef, Jonah Cotter. Jonah’s love of working with kids and successful career in prominent Alaskan restaurants inspired those who were close to him to establish this scholarship. Most known for his infectious sense of humor and skill in the kitchen, Cotter is remembered through the awarding of this scholarship to students pursuing culinary arts or the tourism industry.
This scholarship will make an annual award of $1,000 to students pursuing post-secondary education in culinary arts or the hospitality and tourism industry in Alaska.
The Gary Martin Swim Scholarship
Established in memory of Gary Eugene Martin, this scholarship supports students who have been involved in competitive swim at the high school level and are pursuing post-secondary education. A swim coach himself, Gary is remembered as an active community member and loving grandfather. His legacy as a mentor and coach lives on in the awarding of this scholarship.
Awards of $1,000 will be made annually to eligible students who best exemplify the qualifications of this scholarship.

Of course we would be remiss not to mention some of our established scholarships which also recently opened. Below, you’ll find some familiar names with a long history of making awards through ACF.
These include
- The multi-year Sven E. and Lorraine Eriksson Scholarship for students pursuing engineering or music;
- The Frank and Carol Pinkerton Orchestral Scholarship for students pursuing a career in music education;
- The JJ Klein Scholarship for students with a High School GPA of 2.0- 3.2;
- And the prestigious Neal O. Thorpe Scholarship which supports first-generation college students for up to five years.
These scholarships and 14 others are currently running cycles through ACF.
