The Alaska Community Foundation

2014 Annual Report

Message from the Chair

Alaskans have a fierce love for this place we call home. Whether it’s because we have deep roots in this state, embraced caring communities, enjoyed tremendous opportunities or admire the spectacular beauty that surrounds us, we share a pride in Alaska.

The Alaska Community Foundation provides an opportunity for those Alaskans, like my wife and me, who want to give back a bit of what we have enjoyed. We are joining with thousands of other Alaskans to give to our community’s endowment.

ACF makes a special promise to our donors: we will work with you to ensure your values last far into the future. We will carefully manage your funds so that they will grow and generate earnings that will be used for the causes you believe in. And we will hire professional staff who know and love Alaska as much as you do in order to achieve the greatest impact.

We take the trust that donors place in us seriously. In 2014, donors gave $13.2 million in gifts to ACF, bringing the assets we manage on behalf of Alaskans to more than $80 million. These gifts, and our strategic management of funds, have enabled ACF to make more than $48 million in grants since we were created in 1995. Last year alone, we issued $3.5 million in grants.

This year marks an important transition for ACF. We say farewell to Candace Winkler, who has served as President/CEO for the past five years. Since joining ACF, Candace has led the organization through several statewide initiatives and projects, including providing administrative support of the popular “Pick.Click.Give.” charitable contribution program, partnering with the State of Alaska and the Alaska Children’s Trust to manage the Teen Suicide Prevention Grant Program, and collaborating with statewide partners and the Anchorage Daily News to produce the “State of Intoxication” series. Assets at ACF doubled in size during her tenure, allowing ACF to make even greater impact in our state. While we are sad to see her leave us, we are grateful for her years of visionary leadership that have enabled ACF to better serve Alaskans.

Here at the Alaska Community Foundation, we are honored to be the stewards of your philanthropic goals. We thank you for allowing us the opportunity to make your dreams for a better Alaska come true.

Yours,
Alex Slivka
Chair, ACF Board of Directors

Financial Data

The Alaska Community Foundation’s investment goals are to preserve and enhance the real value of charitable assets over time and to provide for grantmaking in perpetuity. Because we believe grants for tomorrow are as important as grants made today our overriding investment objective for our endowed funds is to maintain purchasing power by maintaining a diverse portfolio and adhering to investment discipline. To maintain purchasing power over the long term without excessive risk, ACF’s investment goal is to return 8% on average.

Endowment for Alaska Pets: Marilyn Rudolph is turning her love of pets into a legacy to support Alaska’s animals

Marilyn Rudolph came to her love of pets later in life than most people. When she moved from Alaska to a dairy farm in Minnesota in her mid-40s, she discovered a passion for animals that she had never known before. When Marilyn returned home to Alaska, she brought three of her barn cats with her. Those cats, one of whom has passed, and the two strays that have since adopted her, have opened an entirely new world and outlook for Marilyn – a passion for the well-being of Alaskan animals.

Engine 557: A legendary steam locomotive has returned to ride Alaska’s rails again

It’s a piece of our history – Engine 557. The last steam locomotive to regularly operate on the Alaska Railroad. And soon, it will again be riding our rails for the first time since 1962, thanks to the help of hundreds ofdonors and volunteers.

Homer Outdoor Wilderness Leaders: how a Strengthening Organizations grant helped an innovative nonprofit achieve greater impact

Jessica Stevens Community Foundation: A highlight of one of ACF’s nine geographic Affiliate Foundations

In nine communities across Alaska, citizens are working together to grow permanent endowments to address local needs through Affiliate Community Foundations. In the northern Susitna Valley communities, volunteers are carrying on the life-work of a treasured member of the community who passed too early: Jessica Stevens.

Pick.Click.Give. An ACF Program

How much does it take to make a difference? How many does it take to have an impact? If we all gave $25, what could be done with it?

Pick.Click.Give., now a well-known and well-loved program allowing Alaskans to give a portion of their PFD to causes they care about, is built on the concept that together we can make a lasting difference for Alaska.

Starting as just an idea over 10 years ago, the program officially began in 2008 as a way to enable every Alaskan who receives a PFD the chance to easily (with the click of a button!) support an organization whose cause they care about. After a 3-year pilot project, Pick.Click.Give. has now become a permanent part of the PFD program.

The Alaska Community Foundation is part of a statewide partnership that manages the program, including the PFD Division of the Alaska Department of Revenue, the Rasmuson Foundation, The Foraker Group, and United Way of Anchorage. ACF houses the staff person in charge of Pick.Click.Give. and manages the statewide marketing campaign as part of our larger efforts to grow philanthropy across the state of Alaska.

This past year, more than 540 nonprofits participated in the program. In the first year, just 1 percent of PFD filers chose to donate through Pick.Click.Give. This year, a record 6.1 percent of Alaskans who filed chose to share their PFD with their favorite nonprofit causes, giving more than $3.3 million.

ACF couldn’t be happier with the encouraging results over the last several years. “We are impressed by the generosity of Alaskans who gave through Pick.Click.Give. said Candace Winkler, president & CEO of the Alaska Community Foundation. “We saw a 25 percent increase in donors and a 20 percent increase in the amount of money donated compared to last year. Thank you, Alaska!”
